The new Cape May Harriet Tubman Museum will open this June.
We’re counting down the days to summer 2020. With the summer season comes fun, sun, and delicious dishes at our Cape May ocean restaurant. Plus, this year, a new museum opening in the heart of Cape May!
Recently, it was announced that Cape May will soon be home to one of the most anticipated museums in the world, the Harriett Tubman Museum. Cape May’s former Howell House, which has been vacant for nearly 40 years, has been renovated for its opening.
This is very exciting news for a town that is already so deeply steeped in History. Cape May is known, in particular, for its Victorian heritage and maritime legacy. However, Cape May also played a pivotal role in the fight to end slavery. Several historic figures critical to the fight against slavery spent their summers in Cape May.
Harriet Tubman is most well-known as an Underground Railroad conductor who fought for abolition. It’s estimated she saved more than 300 salves over the course of 10 years and 19 trips to the South. She is also one of few female war heroines, having served in the Civil War.
What’s lesser-known is that Tubman spent summers in Cape May between 1850 and 1852. She worked as a cook to raise funds for escaped slaves to make news lives for themselves in the North. According to its website, “The Harriet Tubman Museum building is located on a block that anti-slavery activists called home in Cape May. Lafayette Street and Franklin Street became a center of abolitionist activity centered around three important buildings developed in 1846.”
The museum is scheduled to open on June 19 which is the day that Texas officially abolished slavery.
During your visit, be sure to stop by Harry’s for delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We serve a wide variety of classic American fare, perfect for fueling up before (or in the midst of) summer sight-seeing and museum-going. Some of our most popular menu items are:
